Tan a = 3
4
Tan = 0.75
a = Tan-1 0.75
a = 36.87
can't figure out how to get from 0.75 to 36.87 degrees
regards

Your calculator has an inverse tan button.

My calculator's tan inverse function is just above the tan function. Just have to press SHIFT + tan + [number, here 0.75], and you get the result for
tan^{-1}(0.75)
or are you asking something else?
