Make it short and simple. Thank everyone for coming, congratulate the couple and welcome the new in laws into the family. It does not have to be formal. Just speak from the heart.

Say how proud you are of your son. Compliment him on selecting the ideal bride and make a few specific comments about the her best attributes such as that "she has really made an effort to become a member of our family, and we are very pleased to welcome her". You can talk about how well they compliment one another, and say that you wish them many very happy years together.

If you and your son's mother are still married and are happy, of course, it's appropriate to say, "(your wife's name) and I truly hope that you will be as happy together as we have always been. Marriage is a great blessing, and you both deserve to be blessed in this way throughout your lives."

Use your own words. If you aren't comfortable making jokes, don't joke - they won't come off well. And avoid making any jokes at the expense of either your son or his fiancé - the humorous making fun of a person can be hurtful, particularly at such an important life event.

Enjoy the wedding!
