Hi!
I am also one of the unlucky ones whose brown hair dye left me with black hair instead. I've read all your advice about Prell, Hot Oil Treatments and so on, but I am not sure what kind of hair dye (Permanent, semi-permanent,. ) I used.
The box claims it as "Ammonia-Free Permanent Haircolor". (Can I post the brand name?) Do you think it will eventually lighten a little?
Thank you very much for all your help!! Valerie

Some permanent colors will make your hair lighter. If you want your hair a couple of shades lighter, you will need to use a high lift permanent color with a 20-30 volume developer.

Thank you for your answer! ;)
So, I guess the hairdye that I used is really permanent? Can a dye without ammonia even be permanent?
I am asking because I am still hoping to lighten the color by washing my hair with Prell, Dawn, and so on. I did wash it about 5-6 times so far with Head & Shoulders, Prell and a few drops of Dawn in it, but I don't think it has lightened too much...
I was thinking about dyeing over it, but I do have pretty thin hair and I do not want to damage it even further. But then again, washing your hair 3 times a day probably isn't to good either...
My husband told me I now look like Xena - The Warrior Princess. Ahhhhh, somebody help me!! ;)

The hair color you have is permanent. Most permanent color uses both ammonia and peroxide, which enter the hair's cortex and create a change that cannot be washed out. However, some permanent hair color can be ammonia-free, but still contain hydrogen peroxide. If the color you bought says 20 or 30 volume on the box, it will make your hair 1 to 2 shades lighter.
