View Full Version : Repetitive DTS Code P1404

Have a Buick 2001 LeSabre 3.8L-V6, Keep getting a DTS Code of: P1404 "Pintle Stuck Open".... I have Replaced with 4 EGR Valves, Cleared the Code after Installing Each One, and Up Pops The P1404 Code within 15 Minutes... Gotta be Something In that Part of The system other than the EGR to Cause this, WHAT would That be, and HOW to Find out for Sure?? So Far, I have Suggestions of:
1) Faulty MAP Sensor(In My Training I didn't think This Would cause a EGR Code) :confused:
2) Faulty Wiring &/or Connections; Which Wires to Check &/or Trace??
NEED to get this Taken care of soon, as I have already had a Primary Inspection for Emissions Testing (Mandatory Emissions State)

There is a special tool that can be used to test the ERG travel while off the vehicle. GM has one from KentMoore. There may be other manufacturers as well.
I tend to think that after 4(?) EGR valves, you may be looking at a faulty Powertrain Control Moduel (PCM).

So, what would you suggest as HOW to Diagnose "IF" I do have a Faulty PCM? :confused:

Where did you buy the replacement parts? Did you buy the valve(s) from the same supplier every time?

So why would That matter?
But, I Buy a vast Majority of Automotive Parts Through my Commercial Account that I have at NAPA... In this instance, All these Valves were "Delphi" Manufactured (GM/AC DELCO):D

It can make a huge difference. For example, while I do buy some of my parts from NAPA, I won't buy rebuilt alternators from them because they always come back defective. Once the car got above 3,000 rpms it wouldn't charge the way it should and the battery light came back on. Happened to at least 3 different customers, each with a totally different year, make and model of vehicle; the problem was solved as soon as I used a different supplier.

It's just a thought.

Well, I figured out this Problem... Turns out The EGR Valves were ALL fine (with the Exception of the Original), It was that the PCM was stuck in a Loop, and Had to Relearn WHEN the EGR Valve Was Open or Closed.
As Far as NAPA, I have been doing Business with them for 30+ Years, and Have Only Had 1 Problem (had a Bad Starter on a Heavy-Duty Diesel Application, They Not only Replaced The Starter, But also Took care of All the Labor Charges as well)... I've had More Problems with CSK and Auto-Zone for Returned Parts. But, In My Experience No One Bats 100%;)

PROBLEM SOLVED!
Had to Re-Learn the PCM to recognize when The Valve was Opened or Closed.

Glad to hear you solved the problem :) Did you just need to reset the computer? What did you do exactly to make it relearn the pintle position?

I hope you weren't offended by what I said about NAPA. I certainly don't have anything against them either; if I did, I wouldn't buy parts from there.
