There six manned missions that landed on the moon, each with two astronauts who descended to the lunar surface in the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM). These missions were Apollo 11, 12 and 14 - 17. In each case a 3rd astronaut remained in lunar orbit in the Apollo command module. Apollo 13 - did not make it due to an explosion on board which necessitated an emergency return to earth.
