What steps do I need to take to lower the amount of child support that I pay for my children?

What would be my first step in petitioning the court to lower my child support?

Are you unemployed? Are you making less than you were at the time the support was ordered?

I am not unemployed, but I cannot live on what I have left after child support is taken out

You go back to Court and file a Petition for a reduction based on changed circumstances.

In some States you cannot apply for a second Order within a certain period - how old is the original Order?

Then you will need to submit proof to your local Child Support Enforcement agency that your income has decreased.

A judge will review it and decide whether to lower the amount.

Making less doesn't necessarily guarantee support will be lowered. The judge will review the individual case and based on your potential income will determine if the order should be modified.

For instance if you are a physician but currently working at Mickey D's, they more than likely won't lower your support because you have the potential to make more.
