Whose kids, yours or the neighbors? I ask only because if you create a attractive nuisance that injures a kid you could be liable. Barberry is thorny.

What about blackberry or raspberry - they are both very thorny - and not terribly hard to grow (but kind of hard to control!)

Barberry (Berberis ssp.) is a good choice. When I was a kid, I used to cut through a neighbor's yard to go to a friends. He planted barberry bushes in my path, and that was the end of that shortcut. Berberis 'Rosy Glow' has a nice mottled red/pink leaf in the new growth and will probably get about 6' tall. Try Berberis 'Crimson Pygmy' if you don't want it to get to big. When they get about as big as you want them to be, start cutting them back by about 1/3 each year to keep them young, as the new growth has the best color. Don't use hedge trimmers, but prune them by cutting whole branches so they keep a natural shape.
