I live in California. I got a "debt notification letter" in the mail saying that the probation department will take my tax return if I don't pay almost $7000 in 30 days. I have not been on probation for 6+ year's and actually went to prison for the offence and served the time. Anyway, I called them, went in, renegotiated the amount to $4000 and wrote a check with my college money. It had been 2 months, they never cashed my check, the officer that I spoke to said to cancel the check and they will let me know when the negotiation was done because it seemed that I owed less than the amount the check was written for.
Another month later and still no word.
They say they can't give me anything in writing so this won't come back on me. Also they would not give me any kind of receipt or. What do I do?

Go back to their office in person and talk to them and see what the status of your case is now. Phoning does not work with these people as you will never get a straight answer out of them.

Hello d:

This isn't any different than any collection agent. They CAN'T take your tax refund check. I don't even know if they can collect. I certainly wouldn't lay down for them.

Do they have your check?? Did you cancel it?? What's the status?

I canceled the check about 1 month ago and called them many times. They do still have the check, but to my knoledge have done nothing with it. I did already get my tax return in the mail also, and still no calls from them
