When I turn on the water in the kitchen sink, the garbage disposal leaks from the bottom, is there an easy way to fix it, or should I just replace it. The garbage disposal is a Badger 5 and its around 6 years old.

Anne53... get out a flashlight and climb in under the sink... confirm that it is not leaking from above at the collar and just dripping down into the disposal to appear like it is leaking from the bottom.

If you confirm that it is only leaking from the bottom.. then it needs to be replaced. Be sure to replace with a Badger 5 unit and replacement will be a SNAP!

Good luck...

Yes, Mark said it: leak through the housing means GD has to be replaced.

Badger 5 is not the best GD. Go to Home Depot and purchase 3/4" HP - ISE Evolution garbage disposer with Stainless Steel interior. They work great and will last longer.

Let us know if you need help with installation... Milo

Milo may be correct about changing brands but the instructions Mark gave you are the most user friendly with a lot less hassle.
The reason being that if you purchase another Badger 5 you will not have to tear the drain out and replace it with another. You simply snap the new disposal into the old drain and you're good to go. If you change brands you will be giving yourself a lot more work.
My advice? Replace that Badger 5 with another. Good luck, Tom

Tom, Badger and Evolution are both ISE products, just different model.

Are they interchangeable?

Tom, the mounting collar is the same and interchangeable... Few years back, ISE changed design of their drain connection. So poster may have to do some very minor drain pipe riser adjustment..

Sure, Tom... but I agree with your original idea: make it a simple swap w/o any major reworks...
