My newborn was diagnosed with metarsus adductus. The doctor applied cast on both the baby's legs for 2 weeks. The cast was removed after 2 weeks and now the baby is wearing a special shoes. Doctor says the baby has to wear the shoes for 12 hours a day and after 3 months it can be reduced to 6 hours a day.

I read some reports in the internet which says it is not necessary to wear these special shoes as they do not do anything.

The baby has no problem with the cast but I can see he seems to be uncomfortable with the shoes.

Question:

1. Is there a need for the shoes?

2. If the answer to question 1 is yes, then where can I buy a pair that is comfortable for the baby?

This is something that you need to discuss with the doctor or get a second opinion. You should not leave this in the hands of those who are not orthopedic doctors (we are not).

If you have not, please get an opinion from a pediatric orthopod. Don't leave the future of your child's gait up to strangers.

I am hoping to get a second opinion or an answer from an expert from ASK ME help desk.

The experts here are only expert by experience. I am one of the few Registered Nurses here with maternity, labor & delivery, and pediatric experience at this site. Everyone else here speaks from experience only, not education.

Again, I urge you to seek the opinion of a pediatric orthopod.
