Our kids bathroom has developed the strangest problem and I'm not sure how or why it has happened. When they flush the toilet and then run the water in the sink the smell of the water is horrible and smells like something that was recently flushed down the toilet. I have asked everyone I know who knows anything about plumbing and this has them all stumped. It has nothing to do with anything down in the drain, the smell is coming from the water itself. After a while the smell seems to get better, but don't flush the toilet or the smell will come right back. It is just sickening. My daughter refuses to wash her face or anything in that bathroom and I can't say I blame her. Any ideas?

P.S. Also, it is only in that bathroom, not in the other bathroom, kitchen or laundry room at all.

A couple of good Plumbers will answer, but for now I would suspect a clogged vent or drain.
Bleach and running water may help.
If the trap under the sink is not leaking, and full of water, then the smell should be blocked?

First off unscrew the aerator,(see image) and soak it in bleach. Flush the john and sniff the water now. Still smell? Is it worse wit hot or with cold?

If it's only in the bathroom sink, then it must be an odor coming from the drain. Run you some Liquid Plumber through it, followed by a lot of hot water. Should get rid of the odor. If not, get you some vinegar and pour about a quart in it. Let it sit overnight. Then rinse with a lot of hot water.
If this don't work, pull the P-trap and clean out everything you can get to, Good luck.

Hello Tom,

Yes I did see that but some time people can't tell if the smell is from the water or coming out from the drain, cleaning the Aerator and pouring bleach or vinegar are the quick fix and has helped before, lets wait and see what the respond we get from Jmreeser, Thanks.

Thank You for the reply's, I have not been ignoring you at all, I have a spinal condition that has decided to hit me hard at this time and has bed ridden me. I dumped what bleach I had down the drain and left it to sit for 24 hours and will let you know, but it wasn't near enough and as soon as I get where I can go get more I will retry and do it right. Talked to my husband about the other stuff you said and he said he will check out as soon as he has a few minutes. (Works quite away from our home & long hours too, so not a lot of free time) Thank you for all of your reply's again and I will keep you updated as I can.


Sorry it took me so long to answer. The bleach down the sink worked like a charm. No more smell coming out. My daughter can use the sink again. Thank You so much. I appreciate your help so much. Sorry it took me so long to answer back. First my spine took me out, then my mom had a heart attack so it has been nuts here. I really appreciate your help fixing the smelly problem.
