I am starting a janitorial cleaning services in Illinois and Iowa and I will be cleaning offices. It will be just my wife and I for now. What I would like to know is do I need to be bonded and insured to do this kind of work?

Yes, you do have to be bonded and insured. It is in your own best interest and that of your clients to do so.

Hi, drive75!
I live and work in the Quad Cities which is on the border between those two states. You don't have to be bonded unless a customer requires it. You definitely need to have at least liability insurance though.
Being bonded might make you look better for advertising purposes. But, if you aren't required to have it, it is an added expense that you can avoid.
If you would like some help with advertising/marketing of your business that won't cost you anything, please let me know.
Thanks!

You should be insured, lets say you are there, and ruin something, I have a great story on a rug I destroyed when I delievered a electric wheel chair once.
The bonding is only if a customer requires it, some may, and you may want to have your own employees latter bonded if they handle your money.
Also if you have a lot of costly equipment, it will not be covered under your homeowners without a additional amendment added.
And if you are using your personal vechile in your business, be sure to let your agent know, the auto will have to be changed from a person coverage to a business coverage.
