Thanks. Edubuntu was going to be plan B but I hadn't researched what it would take to do it.

It's not as easy as that link makes it out to be. I posted for help in the Ubuntu Apple Users Forum (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7114965#post7114965). Any X jockeys reading this should rush there immediately and brashly point out my configuration failings.
