I have a hole in the bottom of the trap in the outflow pipe from my washing machine. The first joint after the trap is corroded as I think it's an original pipe from when the house was built in 1970. My only problem is getting the joint loose enough to remove the pipe. I have 2 different size channel locks but the corrosion seems to be my main problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi slaino...

Best bet here will probably be to use a reciprocating saw with a metal blade and cut the pipe behind the trap at a good spot in the pipe. Then you can attach a shielded clamp (see picture) and install a new PVC plastic (white plastic) or ABS plastic (black plastic) PTRAP and standpipe. Pretty easy stuff to work with as long as use the correct primer/cement.

The shielded clamp transitions from metal pipe to plastic pipe... just be sure to know which type/size of pipe you are cutting out or bring a sample to the home improvement store with you.

These are available at all home improvement stores.

Let me know if you want to discuss more...
