There are small DIP switches inside the remote and up inside the fan in the control box, both these have to be set to the same settings, like your remote for your garage door opener. Lets assume there are 5 switches, they are small white little slide switches that go up or down and you can set them all up, first one up, first 2 up and the rest down, doesn't matter the combination but they have to match from remote to ceiling receiver, the reason for this is if you had 2 remotes for 2 different fans you wouldn't be turning them both on and off with the same remotes in different rooms, or if you lived in an apartment and your neighbor had a similar fan, if his DIP switches were set exactly the same every time he made changes to his fan like turned it on or off, yours would do the same so its like an electronic key. Open the battery cover on the back and you will see what usually is a red or black switch housing with white little slide switches that you would use a pencil tip to slide them up or down. You just have to be sure the one in the ceiling matches. If you purchased this remote individually of the fan then you have to install the receiver in the fan housing, which will have a small wire antenna, but this has to get hard wired to the circuit that supplies the fan power...
Good Luck... Bill
