I re-installed Windows XP Professional on my friends HP NC8230 laptop and now the multimedia audio controller doesn't update it's driver so I no longer have sound.

This is the error I see under my systems information. "Multimedia Audio Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_0934103C&REV_03\3&B1BFB68&0&F2 The drivers for this device are not installed."

I've tried updating the driver with the links on the HP site but none of them work.

Can some one please help me out before this thing drives me insane?

Did the laptop originally come with vista?

You went to this site and downloaded the driver for the laptop?
HP Compaq nc8230 Notebook PC -  Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=447352&lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=447338&taskId=135)

And downloaded this driver

ADI SoundMAX Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 2000/XP

If originally came with vista, may need the driver

ADI SoundMAX AC97 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit)
