I have a 6 year old. My husband has been dad since day 1 just not biologically. He wants to adopt but we cannot afford adoption right now. I don't know the biological fathers name and he has never been in the picture. The 6 year old has my maiden name for a last name. Is it possible to change his last name before adoption? How much is average adoption?

Thanks

I don't know how much an adoption is in your area, you could check with the clerk of courts in your county. I do know that for an Adult, in Florida, it's $150.00 for a name change, and you have to go before a judge and state that you are not changing your name to get out of trouble, Etc.. Which should make a six year old a shoe-in to getting it done :)

The only thing here is that the biological father NEEDS to sign off on a name change as well. You can't just pretend that a biological father does not exist just because you don't want him to.

What if I don't know the biological father or his location?

Then you NEED a lawyer.
