Entropy is a measure of randomness.

for example, ice has a low entropy because it's crystalline and the atoms have a lower number of degrees of freedom, it is more "ordered".
whereas steam has a high entropy, because each molecule has a high degree of freedom.

in any closed system, entropy cannot decrease. This is the second law of thermodynamics.
