For what I know there are only 3 purposes for them
1- A guard against the Jinn that try to steel hearing from angels of the skies
37:7 (For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits
2- For the perfection and beauty of creation for us to see and think of
67:5 (Asad) And, indeed, We have adorned the skies nearest to the earth with lights, [4] and have made them the object of futile guesses for the evil ones [from among men]: [5] and for them have We readied suffering through a blazing flame –
3- As a means of transportation to be lead with and find the path
16:16 (Asad) as well as [various other] means of orientation: for [it is] by the stars that men find their way. [12]
I don't think from Quran and Sunnah there are any other purposes, I will recheck however

42:29 And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the living creatures that He has scattered through them: and He has power to gather them together when He wills.
Nothing in Islam prevents having other life anywhere in planets and skies, but there is nothing to suggest that I know of (which my knowledge is very very limited by the way) anywhere in Quran or Sunnah that there is live of humans anywhere else beside earth, cause if there was for no doubt if would have been very clear in Quran or Sunnah by the prophet.
