Hello,

I am Canadian, and work in US from March 2008 to December 2008 . My wife is still in Canada. She has no US SSN.

When I fill tax with Turbo, it ask me that I has to enter SSN for my wife.

What should I do?

Thanks,

Shuren

Which visa do you have? Are you filing joint return as residents?

I hold TN Visa. I am trying 'married filing seperately'.

If you file separate return, then you are dual status. This return can not be efiled. If you are not claiming exemption for your spouse, then you can write N R A.

You can also file joint return as residents. You will attach W7 (ITIN application) with your tax return. You will get standard deduction of $10,900 and exemptions for both of you.

You must both declare your worldwide income for 2008. If you have any foreign income, and on that income you paid taxes in the foreign country, then you can claim foreign tax credit (Form 1116) or you can use Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555). Read: Your U.S. Tax Return: U.S. Citizen or Resident with Foreign Income (http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/03/us-citizen-or-resident-with-foreign.html)

If you decide to file as Married Filing Jointly as First Year Choice, you must attach a statement signed by both of you to your return stating that you qualify to file as residents as First Year Choice and that you CHOOSE to file this way.
