The Service Set IDentifier (SSID) is the name of a Wireless Access Point (WAP), often the "wireless" portion of a router. Most router models have a default SSID that's effective the first time you power it on (or after you press the router's reset button), but changing the WAP's SSID, coupled with disabling the router's SSID broadcasting, would help prevent unauthorized persons from accessing your Internet connection through your WAP.
With a custom SSID and and disabled SSID broadcasting wireless client devices (like a game console's wireless LAN function) can't use the WAP until the user enters the SSID. There may be provisions in the console to remember the SSID for future play sessions.
You can usually determine or change a router's SSID by accessing it's control page with a computer running a web browser (like Internet Explorer) on a computer connected to the router by an Ethernet cable. Look in the router's user manual for the control page's IP address and log in directions. The user manual might be on a CD that came with the router. Some manufacturers also make user manuals available in the customer support section of their web site.
