I have one female rabbit and one male rabbit to keep me happy, but I think their babies will would keep me happier.I want my rabbits to have babies, but every time they do have babies the babies die.First when the babies were born they were breathing and moving, but the next day they all died.I keep the mother and the babies in one cage and I put the father in another.I keep it warm enough for them, I always check them once in a while, and I give the mother a good amount of food and water. Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

but I think their babies will would keep me happier

So, do you give a damn about how happy your rabbits are? Do you know what having babies does to your female rabbit? Do you know that her life expectancy has been greatly reduced because of what you want?

Stop being so greedy and only thinking of yourself. Nature is trying to tell you something, that's why all the rabbits are dying.

Get your female spayed. It will prolong her life and make her a better and easy going rabbit.

If you don't know how to breed, you shouldn't, that's a fact.

This post really made me mad.

This post is also making me very mad! What are you doing wrong you ask? You are breeding rabbits with absolutely no knowledge of what you are doing, or even caring if their babies are dying! You'll just try again! Are you kidding me?

Do you not care that both your female and male are suffering for your own selfish needs because they make you "HAPPY." I'm glad that makes YOU happy, because if they could talk they would have a few things to say how happy this is making them! Do you know how those brand new little babies had to suffer to make you "happier." Really?

You said Every time you breed them the babies die! How many times have you bred these poor helpless animals! This is animal cruelty, plain and simple! And you said you check on them "every once in awhile?" OMG, is all I can say!

Get yourself a stuffed animal, and give your rabbits to someone who is knowledgeable enough to care for them!

Okay, I have calmed down Bree-Anna. I have read a few of your other posts. I'm sorry I was so hard on you, but you really have to learn how to take care of your rabbits. I'm sure Altenweg would be very happy to give you more information, so that you can give them the care that they need. She really does know what she is talking about when it comes to rabbits.

We aren't mean people here, and you can talk to us. Some people have tried to help you on your other threads. I will answer your other questions there okay? Just please, don't breed your rabbits anyone okay? Talk to Alty, and she'll give you some advice. You are young, and you don't have the knowledge yet on how to care for your bunnies.

Here is some helpful information I forgot to add that makes me sound less bad.
At first I thought they were both males because about a year passed and there were no babies so how was I supposed to know? When they had their first babies I found them dead in the cage. There were nine of them but I buried them and I practically spent the whole night praying for my rabbits. It wasn't until about 6 months they had there other babies. It was late so I was going to take them to the vet the next day so I can find out if they were healthy not like the other ones.Yesterday morning I found them babies dead.

Sweetie, you really do have to get them fixed. It's not good for rabbits to have litter upon litter of babies. Also, a female rabbit that isn't spayed has a average life expectancy of 3 years, whereas a spayed female can live up to 12 years. That's a big gap!

Male rabbits are friendlier when neutered, also easier to train.

It really is the best thing you can do for them.

I'm sorry I was so harsh with you.

I have 4 rabbits, all fixed and all very happy healthy bunnys.

Love the ones you have, don't try to add more to the mix. Okay?

You aren't bad, you just haven't got the knowledge you need to have. Alty will help you with that as I said. I'm sorry the babies died before you could take them to the vet. This is why you need some info, so that this doesn't accidentally happen again. There are millions of bunnies in shelters, and they are running out of room. If you love rabbits, then you need to learn all you need to know, and then adopt one or two who don't have a homes, but only after you know all you need to know.

I saw the title of this post and just knew Alty would be here lol
Helpful info and I'm glad you are getting them fixed... by the way, when you are trying to figure out what sex they are... the males have dangly bits underneath them... the females don't :p
Years ago my mums friend gave me a 'female' rabbit then I wondered what the two growths were between his legs (I was only about 7 years old)

With your love of bunnies why not put it to great use. First do as you stated and get your pair fixed.
You should use the love you have of bunnies to spend time reading up on just having a bunnie as a pet.
Enjoy your bunnies as Pets Learn all you can by reading about the health and behavior and diet and housing etc. This way you can help others with their pets.
Something else that would be really helpful for you and your rabbits is to sign up at your local Shelter or Humane Society or rescue to help out. Mind you this involves more than just playing with bunnies but it will give you lots of experience. It will also help you see just what the lady above is talking about when she shares the numbers of bunnies put to sleep.
I have volunteered for years as a shelter worker and believe me they put to sleep MANY bunnies because people like you breed them Just because they have a male and female. They then sell or give them away and they go to homes who do the same as you and there are yet more unwanted and well sorry but I know for a fact the shelter where I live puts to sleep at least 20 bunnies a week. That adds up to a lot of bunnies.
Do you really want to add to that?
If in fact you later decide to breed well I hope that it is a lot later and it is after you have learned all you can about owning a bunny and know all you can about diet and behavior and care in general. There is just way more to breeding a animal than having two animals who are male and female.
Please put the love of bunnies to good use. So many unwanted ones could use another person to help them

Wow I didn't know about the bunnies. All we ever hear about are the cats and dogs around here. How sad.

Most people don't know a lot about bunnies, including the pet stores that sell them. It's sad, and many of the store bought bunnies end up in shelters because they are so misunderstood.

For instance, did you know that rabbits aren't rodents? They're actually lagomorphs, very different from rodents.

Rabbits are very social animals, love to be with their own kind. They tolerate human beings because we've forced them to accept us.

Spaying and neutering is a must. If the rabbits that end up in the shelters had been fixed, chances are that they would have remained with the people who purchased them. Behavior changes drastically when a rabbit is spayed or neutered.

My bunny Cotton was a pet store purchase (my one and only, the rest are rescues). The day that he went in to the vet for a pre exam before getting him neutered, I took him to the pet store where we adopted him to pick up a few treats etc.

The pet store people all swooned, gave him pets, adored him. I mentioned that I was picking up some treats for him because he was going under the knife the following day. They were all shocked, they didn't know you could neuter a rabbits.

These are the people selling rabbits left right and center to people who buy them because they are adorable, but have no clue what to do after they get the bunny.

It's sad.

Darn. Another rabbit book by Alty. Sorry all, I just love my bunny babies so much, have to spread the word. If one person reads this and decides to get their rabbit fixed, then it will be worth the cramp I have in my hand from typing. ;)

I love your bunny books Alty :)

Yes, my last bunny was bought from a pet store and they didn't ask me a single thing about rabbits... I could have been buying him to put in a stew and they wouldn't have cared as long as they got their money.
I just got my last bunny from the shelter and they screened me to see if I was a suitable bunny owner.
Thanks to Alty I have now had 2 of my 3 bunnies fixed.
They are feeling much better by the way :)
Diego doesn't even know anything has happened and Dora... well... she is being a bit of a pain but putting up with it :)
Jack however, he's a bit on the old side now I think, I wouldn't want to risk it, plus he lives at my mums because he has been there for the last 8 years and I don't want to move him. He's a strange one anyway, he only likes people! And my mum loves him so he is in safe hands.

I can't even begin to say how happy and proud (yes proud) I am that you got Dora and Diego fixed. They may be a bit unhappy now, but I know that because of this they will live longer and happier lives.

As for Jack, well, he's older and I have to agree that putting him through an operation at this stage in his life isn't a good idea.

Thumper (our little nibbler) was estimated to be around 4 years old when we adopted him, so he would be around 6 now. He was neutered his second stay at the shelter. You know the story, I've told it many times, so I won't bore you with it again, but, I have to say that all the stuff they warned us about with him, well, it's simply not an issue. He is such a love, such a cuddle bunny, such a little stinker! ;)

A picture? Sure, twist my rubber arm.

Thumper;

He's a star here on AMHD, I've posted his picture too many times to count. ;)

And thank you Alty, I'm not looking for praise, I just honestly didn't know about the life span being longer before I met you! :)

Poor little Thumper... they probably just didn't know how to handle or care for him properly :(

I think part of it was not knowing how to handle him, the other part was because he wasn't fixed. He really is a love.

Hmmm, wonder why the pic didn't show up. :(

I'll try again.

Yup, worked that time! He's a real cutie :)

I hope Diegos hormones come down fairly quickly!
I have him and Dora in the same room but on opposite sides...
He can smell her and is running up and down the wire all the time... then he makes it to the end where the food is, stops for a nibble then runs back again. I think I need to put some toys there so he stops running!
Little beggar keeps throwing all his hay out of his bed too, he's going to be a mischeivious little one!

He sounds like my type of bunny, I love the mischievous ones. :)

Have you tried a toilet paper roll filled with timothy hay? It releives stress and keeps them entertained. The toilet paper roll is not at all harmful to them so it's okay for them to eat. Also the telephone books. I know I already mentioned that, but they really love it and it might make him stop throwing his hay around.

shazamataz
May 2, 2009, 12:44 PM
I will try to get my hands on a telephone book, we only just moved house so we've just got the one here :)

Yep, got a toilet roll in there, I discovered a new cheap toy too today!

I had a cardboard box and I cut a big square off it and then slashed the top layer of cardboard with a pair of scissors, kind of hard to explain but it looks like scratch marks on the flat cardboard...
Anyway, I put it in their enclosures and they went nuts! Within a few minutes all the lines I had made had been ripped off in strips.
Just thought I'd share because I was proud that I had made something useful lol :D

Love it, I'll try it too. Bunny's are funny, they much prefer the homemade toys to the store bought ones. :)

May 3, 2009, 02:39 AM
Yeah I have found that as well, mine love anything made of cardboard!
I just snapped some pictures, Dora has her collar off now and hasn't touched her stitches so fingers crossed.
Diego doesn't even know they are there!
I picked him up yesterday and put him on his back on my lap just to check everything was OK and I thought they has made a mistake...
He still has his two little lumps and I couldn't see anything different, then I looked very closely and I say two tiny little blue threads... they did a very good job!
Dora's was a tad more obvious because she has a bald tummy! Lol

Ok, here are the promised pictures...

First one: Diego and his wonky ears lol

2nd one - Diego rubbing his chin on the parrot toy

3rd one - Diego nibbling on the parrot toy

4th one - Dora being very angry at me

The bottom one is their temporary enclosure, They are missing their blankets though because they are in the wash at the moment :)

Alty
May 3, 2009, 03:31 AM
They are adorable. I love Dora's angry look, too cute.

Diego has really nice coloring, love the floppy ears. I've never owned a lop eared, always wanted one, maybe one day, if hubby lets me get a fifth! :)

shazamataz
May 3, 2009, 04:05 AM
Thanks :)
Diego is a very unusual color, it's hard to capture on camera, when we took him to the vet on Friday they asked what color he was and we were at a bit of a blank lol
We had to just get him out of the pet carrier and show them, then the receptionist just went "oh.. um he's a ... let's say... chocolate with black points" lol

I'm in love with lops, they just have the cutest faces :) I hope you can get a 5th one! It would be well worth it. They are the laziest of the breeds too, when we let Dora for her run in the backyard she hops a few steps, muches some grass then belly flops lol

I can't wait till they are all healed, they can't go outside for a run for 2 weeks :( They get to run in the house for about half hour a day but I feel mean not giving them their 'outside time'

Once they go in the big bunny run they can run and jump to their hearts content lol, I'll post a pic of that too when it's finished, it's insane!

Alty
May 3, 2009, 04:20 AM
Love the bunny belly flop, Thumper is my flopper. He'll be hopping around doing his thing and then all of a sudden... FLOP! The first few times he did it it looked like he just dropped dead, scared the crap out of me. Naughty bunny! ;)

Cotton is my binky bunny, he's a binkying fool. Get him in an open space and it's hop binky, binky, binky, hop and then some more. I love it.

Oreo is my climbing bunny. He can get onto the furnitue with just one little hop. It comes in handy when the dogs are around.

Kilala just love to explore. I don't think there's one corner of our house she hasn't inspected, sniffed and pooped on.

I'd love a lop eared. We almost got one when we went to adopt Kilala, but she struck a chord with us. She was totally destroying everything in her cage, throwing things around, having a blast. When I put my finger in the cage she came and sniffed it, accepted a little pet on the head, that was it, I was in love.

They all have such different personalities, love them to bunny bits. :)

shazamataz
May 3, 2009, 04:36 AM
They really do have different personalities :) I don't if it's because he is crabby about being fixed but Diego tosses everything around... I get the dustpan and broom out to sweep up the poop and he grabs the dustpan and tries to pull it out of my hands lol I usually end up giving in and letting them out while I sweep their little runs.

I'd really love for my dogs to get along with the bunnies.. they sniff each other through the wire but I wouldn't risk letting them free together... Brody tends to rip the stuffing out of toys and he might mistakes the bunies for one!

Alty
May 3, 2009, 04:49 AM
The only dog we allow near the bunnies is Indy, our 14 year old lab. They hop on his back, nibble on his tail, lick his nose, you name it. He loves them, but his eyesight is bad, he probably thinks they're puppies. ;)

I wouldn't trust Chewy and Jasper with the bunnies for one second. I don't think either one would hurt them intentionally, but they play rough and the bunnies don't.

Diego sounds like Kilala, welcome to a little handful. :)

shazamataz
May 3, 2009, 04:58 AM
Lol yep, I'm not used to having a naughty bunny! It's a welcome change though, he's a funy little thing, I thought it would take him a while to settle in and show his true colors but it didn't take him long, he's only been here 3 days!

And yep, I'm going with he thinks they are puppies hehe

Alty
May 3, 2009, 05:02 AM
Naughty bunnies are fun, they give you a run for your money.

Kilala is just a little stinker, the smallest of the 4 with the biggest attitude. I think she could kick anyone's arse, even Oreo's and Oreo is at least 2 times her size!

Yup, she's the bunny version of me. Go figure! ;)

I do love your use of the good old soap box.

Alty

From what I've heard you can usually determine a cockatiels sex by their coloring. Here's the funny thing, our cockatiel is a very unusual color.

We got it (hee, hee) from a guy that hubby works with, his son was allergic. They got it (hee, hee) from a breeder. This person has been breeding cockatiels all her life and she could not for the life of her determine whether Marty was a boy or a girl.

No eggs ever so maybe she's a boy. ;)

Not a problem alty. I was enjoying reading your conversation about rabbits that turned to birds lol.And I noticed your comments about how the name could go both ways and my cousin popped right into my head.. Beautiful pictures that have been included to. I used to own a holland lop and a mini rex crossed with jackrabbit and I loved them. Sadly I had to get rid of them 9 years ago when I moved.

He was definitely unique looking. Had the build of a jack but looked like a rex. I had gotten him from a rex breeder who had him as a family pet. They had babies once (when I did not know the lop was a girl) and all the bunnies that were born came out pure white with red eyes. And boy didn't they get big. Sadly one was born with four broken legs and that's when I decided to fix them. So no more accidental births and no more bunnies I had to put down. Good luck with the housework alty I'm off to do some of that myself and take rebel for a walk on the dykes *silly dog loves the dykes I think it's the ducks honestly*

I have a nice set of teeth marks in my finger... must remember to hold food next time I pick him up!
I think he got a bit rowed up though because he was grunting at Dora when I had her out of her pen...

Can't wait till his hormones finally die down!

The vet's right. :)

Kilala was a biter, and boy could she dig deep.

Start slow Shaz. Open his cage, have a treat in your hand, let him come to you. After a few days of him taking the treat from you then reach out to pet him. If he backs away then let it be until the next day.

Remember, rabbits tolerate us, they don't necessarily love being around us humans. ;)

Kilala now sits in my lap and loves her daily rub downs. If you try to pick her up (without a lap underneath her) she goes nuts. She doesn't like the feeling of not having her feet on solid ground. I don't blame her, I'm afraid of heights too. :)

I've never had a bunny that wasn't cuddly so it's pretty new to me.

Dora does the same thing as Kilala, she likes her lap scratches but hates being picked up or put back down, when I put her on the ground I have to get on my knees and kind of slide her down so she doesn't jump.

Ditto with Kilala. She's a real squirmer and man is she strong. She's the only bunny I've ever had that I cannot hold onto. Sad.

Like I said, she's the bunny version of me. Snarky, temperamental, feisty, but damn is she cute. ;)

cute as a button ;)

I never did understand that saying. Buttons really aren't that cute, in fact, they're kind of funny looking.

Deep thoughts by Alty. :D

I'm going to start a thread, much like the cute cats one, but for bunny's. Got to give the bunny's equal billing.

I'll post the link when I'm done. :)

That really doesn't surprise me lol

I was 'dog freak' in high school because we had 8 dogs at one point... my school jumper was always covered in dog hair :( Mum spent hours picking it off but it was no use.

It was a nightmare...

2 great danes and 5 poodles and a shih tzu. This was a few years ago.

I have taken 2 dogs from their place (they were mine anyway from when I lived there) so now they have 1 great dane and 4 poodles.
She is getting another poodle in a few months... the joy of owning show dogs lol

I'm hopefully getting my new baby by the end of the year :D

No thankfully the only hair I trim on my dog is on his feeties... the fur tends to get a little tooo long and stuff gets stuck between his toes.. silly short haired dog with long hair on his toes and neck

I give my big guys a buzz cut in the summer. They have black fur and lots of it, it's too hot for them.

It takes 4 days for each dog because the clippers get overheated and I have to set them aside to cool off.

She makes money off grooming so I get to use all the good stuff :D

Trust me, it's not fun at all.

The clippers we have are cheap but the best we could find without getting professional clippers (too expensive). Poor pups, they hate it as much as I do, but when it's done, boy are they happy! :)

Mine do the, roll on mommies bed, throw the pillow around, get all the itchy hair off on mommies blanky, run to the backyard, roll in the grass, get all dirty, then grin dance.

Yup, they're oodles of fun! :)

Some Does (female rabbits) just arnt cut out to be mothers and sometimes they will eat them, not feed them, or accidentally smother them. Those things can also happen if you touch the kits (baby rabbits) - most does will reject their kits if they have been handle by human hands, just like most other animals. For example - if a kit falls or accidentally gets kicked out of the nest box put rubber gloves on before picking it up and returning to the box.

Does need to be provided with a nest box - basically a regualar wooden box, the top is only covered halfway (its a place for the mother to be able to rest away from the kits when they are old enough to start roaming away from the box), and the front board is shorter in heighth for easier access.

Plenty of straw or haw needs to be provided for the mother to builder her nest inside the box, she'll had her own hair that she pulls from her tummy to the mix as well.

I feed my pregnant rabbits 16% protein rabbit food instead of the standard 8%. The 16 is used for meat rabbits, rabbits that suffer from weight loss, and I like to give it to my brood Does because the extra protein is good for them.

It is best that the cage that the babies are born in and stay in until weined have baby wire around the bottom sides of the cage or at least a board so that the kits don't fall out through the standard rabbit wire.

---Just an note before you decide to breed ---

I am a firm believer that animals should be bred only to improve future generations - weather its for better personality characteristics, conformation, color, size, etc. I just think that before you breed your rabbits you need to make sure that you are bring desirable kits into the world. Know what you are doing before you breed. Don't let it be a guessing game - running test after test.
