View Full Version : Replacing Tub Spout

I need to replace my tub spout, because my diverter stopped working so well. I unscrewed the old one, and there's 3-1/2" of copper pipe with a threaded end sticking out of the wall. I went to Home Depot and bought a "universal" replacement spout which doesn't fit. The pipe is not long enough. How do I resolve this? Are there different size spouts? Is there an adapter I can install without soldering or cutting anything?

Thanks.

Take it back and ask for a 1/2" nose connection diverter spout, (see image).
Good luck, Tom

The replacement spout I purchased does claim to work for 1/2" nose connection. It's a Danco, and I've attached a stock picture so that you can see what parts and pieces it comes with. I was trying to attach it without using any of the included adapters.

We don't use the type of spout that you have. We use the slip on type.
But you're going to hafta use the adapters For the nose connection to work the 1/2" female thread must be installed at the front of the spout. Follow the instruction on the installation sheet that came with the spout. Regards, Tom

The spout that you purchased is suppose to work in your situation but the white plastic the you unscrewed is installed with some type of glue and when unscrewed the glue stays in the threads and makes it almost impossible to screw it on to the adapter that is on the copper pipe.

If I were you I would go to a plumbing shop or a wholesaler that sells to the public and get one that does not have the white plastic.
