I'm attempting to tile our bathroom floor with porcelain tile and was wondering - 1) Can I tile directly over the existing sheet linoleum? 2) What do I use as the starting point for my 1st tile? Thank you.

I agree on both counts. Maybe start by calling 3 pros for an estimate,ask lots of questions and you will see what they recommend. Then you can judge better if your skills are up to the task. You need a solid sub floor like Hardienacker board, Ditra, Wonderboard, etc...

OH, I see. He should con 3 pros to come over and give him advice on how they would do it so he can learn enough to do it himself. OK good plan. Honest too! :mad:

Rip out the vinyl and it's underlayment. What you have under that will determine how to continue prepping for ceramic. Also, you need to post back with your joist size, spacing and span. You can figure out your layout by laying tile across the floor, starting with a full tile at the door and working them across the floor, including your grout spacing. This will show you the size of the cut at the opposite end. Depending on the size of the tile, adjusting your spacing by a 1/16" up or down can leave you with desirable sized cuts at the opposite end. Play around until you are satisfied. Then see from side to side. I'll many times go full tile along the tub and whatever falls on the opposite side and gets covered with a vanity and behind the toilet is how it just ends. No one see's those as part of the layout anyway.
