Hi,

I did a simple search and could not find the answer to my question, so please pardon me if this question has already been asked and answered.

I recently got married and my wife is not a US Citizen and does not have an SSN. I was told that in order to get an SSN, she needed a certain visa or a working permit.
She does have an alien registration number, but is it OK to put that number in place of an SSN on my tax return, or do you strictly need an SSN?

Thanks in advance!

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident, then you can file joint return as residents. Attach W7 (ITIN application) with your tax return.

Thanks! I forgot about the tax ID number and didn't know I could just file that with the tax return... does that mean I can't e-file and must do a paper filing?

Yes, you have to mail the return.
