Hi Gregory:

Best advice I can give you here is to make sure there is absolutely NO WATER anywhere in the water lines you will be working on.

Then, clean the pipe/fittings with sandcloth... especially around the old joints!! You would then flux the old joints as well as the new pipe/fittings. This way, if you do disturb an old joint then you can just hit it with a bit of solder and hopefully it will reseal.

Otherwise, you want to do all the above and use a moderate heat that points AWAY from the old joints...

Finally, you can also cover the old joints with a wet rag while soldering the ones close up... solder fast and then cool the joints with that wet rag right after.

Let me know if you need more info...

Missed one. Make sure that the end of the pipe your soldering is open.

Gregory, if you never soldered before you might be a candidate for a Sharkbite connector, pricey but no skills needed. Welcome To Cash Acme (http://www.cashacme.com/prod_sharkbite_pushfit.php)
