You will need to purchase a wireless router. Connect it between your cable and desktop. Your laptop should come equipped with 806.11 x wireless card built in. With the router in place, you should have no problem connecting from another room. Also, buying an USB adapter will increase your range but it is not really necessary.

If you have the EVDO chip in your laptop, that is strictly a Verizon service. You should also have a wireless card in the laptop that you can use on any "home" wireless network that you can set up when you purchase a wireless router that you hook up to your high speed internet such as dsl or cable.
