Rabbits are social animals and prefer to have a friend. Your vet is wrong, not surprising as most vets have absoultely no experience with rabbits.

Just like anything new coming into the house, your current resident and the newcomer will have to get used to each other. Not all rabbits do well with a friend, but most rabbits, with patience and supervision, will learn to get along and then become a bonded pair.

You will need another cage because they should not be kept in the same quarters at first, not until you're sure that they get along.

The first time you introduce them there may be a fight, make sure you're there to break it up as they can really hurt each other.

They should spend time together everyday, supervised and for a few hours if possible.

Put their cages side by side so they can learn eachothers scents and socialize.

Make sure that both rabbits are fixed. If one isn't, you will have problems. An unaltered rabbit is more aggressive and will try to mount the other rabbit, that makes it hard to socialize them.

Trial and error, patience and chances are very good that they'll soon be best friends.

Good luck.
