My house is prewired. A red wire, black and a white wire. Ceiling fan came with a green (ground) , black ,white and a black\white wire. I only have one switch,for both light and fan. The instructions state black to black & black\white wire, white to white but nothing for the red wire. I looked on the wall switch and the red is connected to it so it must be hot. What wire does the red wire get connected to? Why don't I have another wire from the ceiling for the ground or is the red wire the ground?

Is that red wire hot all of the time or is it controlled by a second wall switch?

Try black-black, white-white, striped-red and tell us what it does.
