Could somebody kindly direct me to the passage in which St. Paul mentions putting down one's toys.
If I remember correctly he begins with "when I was a child".

I believe you are quoting 1 Corinthians 13. However, Paul does not phrase the verse quite the way you did. He says the following:
"When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways."
Giving up childish ways is his way of saying that he became wise.
