I was wondering, what would a sex offender have to do to be able to do a change of address?

Hi, Tink8872!

That would depend on the laws that are in place where they live and where they would like to move, if where they would like to move isn't under or in the same legal jurisdiction where they're currently living.

Around where I live, a sex offender, if moving within this same city, needs to notify the police. If the person wants to move to an unincorporated area of the county where I live, he or she needs to notify the sheriff. In either case, law enforcement will make checks to see if he or she is living where stated.

If still on probation or parole, then the person will also need to let the officer overseeing their probation or parole of their intent to move and the location to where they will be moving.

There may also be a time frame in which the person will need to let authorities know about when and where they have changed residency.

Depending on possible residency restrictions to keep within the legal distance allowable from certain places then that will also need to be verified by the authorities.

I'm sure that the laws concerning this will vary depending on the location. Around here, a move is pretty simple to make. However, in some locations where the laws are stricter, there might be more steps to take as well a "hoops" to jump through. So, without knowing the actual location, it's hard to say the precise steps that a sex offender would need to do in order to change his or her location of residence.

Thanks!
