What kind of sound is it?

I remember my daughter use to afraid of the firetrucks siren but she would excited when she saw a firetruck and always wave at them. However when they were rushing to a fire and she heard the siren that came from it she would cover her ears and scream as well.

As my daughter got older the siren doesn't bother her so maybe your son will do the same.

Have you had his hearing checked?
While he might be able to hear conversation and act as if his hearing is fine he may be suffering from HYPERACUSIS.
Definition ; means reduced tolerance to suprathreshold sounds. Sounds that can be tolerated by others but annoying, uncomfortable, and in some cases painful to others. The origin is typically considered to be in a central auditory system.

I am including a link that I think you will find helpful.

Hyperacusis, hyper acusis, Hypersensitive Hearing, Hyper Acute Hearing, Auditory Integration Training, Berard AIT (http://www.aitinstitute.org/hyperacusis.htm)

Hi, sarah_20pgn!

When I was very young, I used to cry whenever I heard any kind of music, no matter what kind of music it was. When I was taken to the doctor about the problem, he found that I needed my tonsils and adenoids removed. After they were removed, my problem stopped.

I don't remember what the problem was with my adenoids. I suppose they could have been swollen and that might have been causing problems with my hearing.

Thanks!

My stepson has very sensitive hearing, mostly to loud levels. He has aspergers syndrome, which is part of the autism spectrum.
