My daughter was seen in the ER and dx w strep throat & a sinus infection. She was given Zithromax. She took that for the 5 days as prescribed. She felt better. We went to her ped doc for a follow up, he did a rapid strep test because her glands in her neck were still very swollen, she was positive for strep again. She was given a script for Augmentin 400mg twice a day. That was on Monday 03/23, took her back to doc on 03/26 because she was still running a fever of 102.2 so he did bld wrk (CBC was normal) and a urine test was normal and he sent away test for EBV/Mono. He prescribed her Zithromax again to take along with her Augmentin. 2 doses of Zithromax and Augmentin since Monday my daughter is still running a fever of 102 or greater at times. Which I am giving her Motrin for that. She complains of a headache and tummy ache when she has the fever. I am getting really concerned. She is only 5 yrs old. What else do I do or can I ask of the doctor. I told him today that if she has a fever again tomorrow I will be taking her to Children's Hosp to see if they feel she needs IV antibodics. I am just very concerned and don't know where or what else to do?? Any advice?:(

When I was 15 I had VERY bad strep, just like this. I was also on the same medications, my doctor even doubled them on top of each other. I ended up getting some kind of shot, and also had to take oral steroids to help kill the strep. It was horrible. Mine lasted about a month as well.
If her fever is still that high, I would take her in to the hospital. If not, you could consider getting a second opinion(which is nothing against your doctor, but you can never be too safe with your child)
Keep giving her fever reducers, and cool rags on her head. Poor baby I hope she gets better soon!!

Well, it's obvious the Z-pack isn't working, nor is the Augmentin. What needs to be done is a C&S (culture and sensitivity) so that the bacteria can be cultured to find out what antibiotics will kill it and which ones won't.
We are seeing an increase in bacterial infections (including strep throat) that are resistant to certain antibiotics because so many people stop taking the abx as soon as the symptoms go away.
You may also want to lysol your home, your car, etc. Anywhere she may have been where the strep bacteria can be hiding.

We ended up in the ER on Sat for 6 hrs because her fever with meds just would not go down. The ER doc just wanted to send us home, but I told him I would not leave until he contacted the ENT specialist that was on call and see what they would suggest. He actually did do that and she wanted her to have IV steroids and IV antibodics. The steroids she said would reduce the inflammation in her tonsils and glands and the antibodic would help the infection. We had an appt with the ENT ( same doc that was on call) on Monday 03/30 and she said that her tonsils are so infected and swollen along with her glands that they are not fighting off the infection/nor draining the infection as they should be doing. So we stopped the Augmentin and she finished the Zithromax on Monday and now we are one Omnicef (another antibodic). Needless to say the ENT said her tonsils have got to come out, she is just trying to get some off the infection reduced so that we can do surgery which is scheduled for April 24th!! Thank you all for your suggestions & advise. I at least got some hope that once they are out she will be much better:) So far her temp is low 99's which we are very thankful for. Thank you all again:) God bless you

Hi, Bjgunn this is not a very unfamiliar story.
Sometimes there is such severe inflammation of the tonsils that the antibiotic either does not reach them in sufficient amounts or just gives up the fight (with the invading organisms... bacteria or virus).
I have found that using an herbal preparation that works alongside with the antibiotic significantly increases the efficacy of the antibiotic used.
The herbal preparation ideally should be a proprietary one, as that works faster than simple home-made herbal treas, because the herbs used are often in their pure form.
Many Ayurvedic drug companies with international quality standards have their products in most Western countries, now.
Often it is worth considering using their products along with your regular treatment, for they often make a difference in the outcome!
