Hi I am thinking of laying a new floor in my kitchen (marmoleum) and wondered how important is it to remove the old floor, or can I just lay over it as the surface is nice and level. (would also be much quicker and easier)

I'm a DIYer, but I would never lay a new floor over an old one. The first thing that comes to mind is that adhesives won't stick as well as they should. The floor may look nice and smooth, but it probably isn't, etc. Ever wonder why professionals don't put one floor over another? I always tip the old floor down as far as I can; put on a new piece of Luan, and put the flooring over that.

I've seen floors where people have laid a new floor over the old one. The floors usually shift with time; sometimes buckle. They looked awful. It wasn't worth the ease of installation.

What is you old flooring? Many old floors can be covered but not all. We need more details to better advise you. Are you installing marmoleum in sheet, tile or click?

Currently have lino down. Only seen marmoleum in sheets but tiles would be better I guess just not easy to find.
