You shouldn`t smell gas,, but are you sure the gas is turned on? Is there a valve in the gas line that someone might have turned off

Would the igneator and a ckicking sound still go off if there isn't any gas on but I'm almost sure it is on

Should be the igniter comes on, gas valve clicks to open,, but if no gas you will get no flame

If you have a standing pilot it should stay on and then it will heat the thermocoupling which in turn opens the main gas vale .Thats when the main burner should light.
Do you have a glow ignitor?
Do you have a pilot flame?
Is the knob on gas valve at the furnace turned to on?

With all the power off you can bleed the gas at the drip tee.But you must be careful.

Let us know.

If you could post a picture it would help.

Is there a circuit board with a led light that is blinking? The circuit board may be inside the cold air box.

A lot of times when a system sits dormant like yours the gas valve can get 'stuck'. Try tapping on it with a hammer or something similar. You are not trying to beat the thing into submission, just free up the valve.

When our Rheem (Criterion model) gas furnace was just blowing air, we called for a service person.

Within five minutes he found the problem.

A cracked HOT SURFACE IGNITER.

I was told that this part does not last forever.

The igniter looks like a 2 inch tall element (similar to what is inside an incandescent light bulb but flat, like a large paperclip) mounted on a square base that is attached to 6 inches of wrapped wires that ends in a two prong male plug.

Hot surface igniters are very delicate and the igniter part should not be touched by human hands because the oil on our hands will damage the surface (just like a halogen bulb).

+

Here is the write up …

• Service call on a Rheem 80+ furnace.

• Found cracked hot surface igniter.

• Replaced igniter and cleaned fame sensor.

+

$079.95 = service call
$040.00 = ½ hour labor at $80.00 / hour
$065.00 = hot surface igniter

$184.95 = total

Here is what a Rheem hot surface igniter looks like:

The LEFT one is good.

The RIGHT one is bad.

Terence, please read the OP before offering any advice as you could not any further from accurate. The hot surface igniter works according to the poster.

And for what it's worth, if you paid $185 to have a HSI replaced then you got hosed.
