I have a small (4x4) half-bath. Putting in new tile floor. The tiles are 6.5"x6.5". My wife wants them laid in a diamond pattern in the room.

Has anyone seen tile laid in this pattern in a small room? I haven't. Does it make a room look too busy? I've read that it might.

How do I get started laying the tile in this fashion? Is it as simple as finding the center of the room, snapping diagonal lines in the each quadrant and following that pattern?

How many tiles do I need to buy? It seems as though I'll need more to lay the tile in this pattern, since there will be a lot of cuts.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Actually if you snap the 45 degree line and lay out the pattern right the off cuts from one side can be used on another side. But find the center then diagonal lay out. Shift pattern up the diagonal and on either side of that so cuts works for both/all side. You can shift 1/2 tile or whole tile or what ever works. Its really a misnomer on using a lot more tiles if pattern is laid out accordingly.

Lay out the floor figure pattern count tiles Its basically the same as squarely laid because the area is just that. Its all about the cuts here on using the off cut up.

Hi all...

In most small bathrooms I've tiled I use a 12" x 12" tile... makes room appear larger. The diagonal pattern can be very nice.

Whichever tile you use... dry fit the tiles in the pattern you choose and make your choice after you see it in place. Then you guys can decide together... ;)

I usually cut a couple tiles in half and dry fit the pattern from the threshold to see where tiles will end up. If I end up with a really small tile I will shift the pattern to make for larger tiles in the pattern. Hope that helps...
