Hi,

I know that a lot of questions about filing taxes have been asked. However, I couldn't find one that suited my profile.

*I was in the U.S from Jan 2008 to June 2008 on L1 visa. I was living in NJ but was working in Philadelphia where I paid both state and local taxes. So I have to file PA state returns.Should I file NJ returns also ?(though my W2 mentions only PA state taxes)

*I then went back to India, got an F-1 and came here (to California) Sep 2008. From Sep 2008 - Dec 2008 I worked part-time on-campus as a software developer. The W2 for this on-campus job says that California state and local taxes is 0. Should I file California state return also?

I have to file federal and state taxes for income earned on both L1 and F1 and am not sure what forms to fill and what deductions to apply for.

Could any of you please help?

Thanks a lot!
Cheers,
Lakshmi

What date did you come to the U.S. in Jan 2008 and leave U.S. in June 2008? How many days you had in U.S. on L1?

For state taxes read: Read: Your U.S. Tax Return: Working or Living in Two or More states (http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/06/working-in-two-or-more-states.html)

Hi,

I came on Jan 5th 2008 and left on July 1st or 2nd (dont remember the exact date) 2008. I stayed for 179 or 180 days.

Thanks,
Lakshmi

You will file nonresident tax return for 2008 and Form 8843. If you had income during F1, then you can claim treaty deduction.
Read: Your U.S. Tax Return: U.S. Tax Filing Requirements for Non-Residents (http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/03/us-tax-filing-requirements-for-non.html)

Were you present in the U.S. during 2007 or 2006 at all?
