Hello,
I have a 2 year old, hampton bay ceiling fan with, 6 blades and a 5 light fixture. It has two pull chains, one for light and one for fan, the fan has 3 speeds. The light part works great, except I have had to change the pull switch for the light a while back. When I pull the chain for the fan, the first setting only hums and the fan barely moves, the second setting, it hums louder and the blades move a little faster, on the third setting, the blades seem to go faster and less humming. I have reversed the direction swith and got the same results. There is no remote control used with this fan. It's a beautiful fan, shiney brass? That's gold looking and darkish streaked blades. The lights are white frosted tulip shaped with a diamond cut design and outside the housing underneath the same diamond pattern cut into it. any suggestions for an older woman that does her own electrical work?

Hello SQUALLMOMMA

From what you describe, the problem seems to be the capacitor inside the fan. Note the wiring (make a small drawing), than take the old capacitor with you to the sparepart shop, so you can replace it with a similar one).

Success!

I agree, probably a capacitor:
