Hello,

I am a resident of Massachusetts, but was recently hired by a company in Texas and received my signing bonus from there. I have not, however, yet ever resided in Texas. This is the only income I received this year because I am a student, and will be starting my job in Texas after graduation. Which state do I file in?

Thanks! Ang

There is no State income tax in Texas, I don't think you file anything in Texas.

Yes, I realize that. So do I file them in Massachusetts, because I am a resident here, or am I off the hook?

If you are present in a state, then any income earned during this period, must be reported to the state.

To your resident state, you must report your worldwide income for the year.

If you live and work is a state but your employer is from another state, then your income is only subject to the state where you live and work. Read: Your U.S. Tax Return: Working or Living in Two or More states (http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/06/working-in-two-or-more-states.html)
