How do you fix a shower drain that is stuck in the closed position?

Are you asking about a Touch Toe drain? (see images) Any of these look familiar? Cheers, Tom

No. It is a flip type drain with the lever at the overflow. I can push it down to the open position, but it promptly drops back down to the closed position.

You need to buy a replacement overflow trip lever face plate. Take the two screws that hold the face plate on out, pull faceplate out with plunger assembly. Unhook plunger rod from trip lever. Take faceplate to a plumbing supply store, and tell them you want a new one.
The spring on the old faceplate lever is worn out. Please let me know if this helps. And let us know if it solves the problem(it most likely will).

I have already removed the faceplate and the plunger assembly. It sure seems like you have me on the proper track. Thanks for the help. I will let you know how it goes.

MGD nailed it. The spring broke in the chrome face plate and that should be all that you need to replace Good luck, Tom

Hi all:
Just to mention last detail...
Basically, after purchasing a replacement face plate all you should need to do after removing the screws is remove the cotterpin from the old faceplate and install the new faceplate with the new cotterpin supplied.
Good luck!
