Hi,

I am a student from India on F1 visa. Recently, I had some questions on taxes and contacted H&R block, and they said I could file a resident tax filing even though I have been here for only 4.5 years. Also, they said students are also entitled to get the stimulus package(of last year). I did not get one last year, because all these years I was filing 1040 NREZ.

Can anyone advise if this is true, and if I file through H&R block, will it take care if I have any problems in future with this filing? I am worried any improper filing might affect H1B or Green card applications later.

Thanks

Raghu

For 5 years you are nonresident. You must file nonresident tax return and will not get stimulus rebate.

Thank you for the reply. I too was expecting the same thing, but got surprised with H&R block's reply. Do you think filing tax returns through H&R as per their advise (as NR or R as they suggest) is OK? Do you think there might be any problem in future, and I can consult them if any in the future? What can you suggest me about this.

Thank you!

Most of the tax professionals have poor knowledge about visa holders' taxes.
