Hi,

I have been advised to renew my computers IP address, but when I try to change it, it stays the same! I tried two ways:

1. I clicked "repair" when under the support tab of "my local connection"

2. Run cmd, ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew etc.

Any way neither of these steps actually change my ip address, its always the same!

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Martyn

Do you know if you have a static IP or a dynamic IP?

If you have a dynamic IP you can reset your router or disconnect your modem for about 30 secs and then reconnect - this should assign you a new IP (if dynamic IP)

If static, personally don't know other than what you have already tried.

Others may have some thoughts on this

This is all messed up:

First, "What is my IP"?
Is it
What is my public IP? Or
what is my private IP address?

If your using ipconfig to to you what your IP address is, it will tell you your private IP address. Usually 192.168.x.y or some other networks like ones that begin with 10.

Now, the IP address that everyone sees is what's presented to the outside world. That address you can get from the following website http://whatismyip.com

The leases assigned to these addresses usually determine when they change.

Which one is bothering you and why?

Many things assume This is a short version and you have a single dynamic IP and your using NAT.
