Hi

I am an F-1 student and this is the first time I filed my tax return. I did that online through online e-filing site and I am getting stimulus of $300.

Now I get to know that we are not eligible for stimulus. But I have already filed it and it has been accepted. Can I face any sort of problems by doing so?

They say I might face problems while my H1 application later on.

I am skeptical if I made a big mistake.

Do suggest me what should I do?

On F1/OPT you are exempt from residency for 5-years. You must file non-resident tax return Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ and Form 8843.

Now you must file amended tax return Form 1040X with properly done 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ with Form 8843.

As I said that I've already filed the tax online I had no idea that I was not suppose to do so but I've done it. So I should file it again via papers by filling 1040X, 1040NRZ & 8843??

Yes, amend the return using Forms 1040X, 1040NR-EZ and 8843.

Also, return the $300 Stimulus Payment by writing a separate check and clearly identifying in the check that you are returning the $300 Stimulus Payment.
