Iris bed was here when I purchased home and is very large. They do not bloom very much and I am in the northeast of america so it is cold here and our growing season is short. Can I do the transplanting now in the very early spring? I would like to move them elsewhere but they are like rocks. What can I do? Will they survive if transplanted in the early spring rather then September as I have been told is the best time?

Iris are very hardy. Transplant them now before they start waking up and blooming. They should be just fine.

Twink is right, they are like weeds, and actually grow by the roadside in the country around here.

Just make sure you don't bury their 'feet', which is the bulb at the bottom of the long leaf. They don't do well, don't bloom well, if the feet are buried.

Don't be afraid to use a knife to separate the bulbs. You can be quite ruthless and you won't hurt them. Sort of like splitting up Hostas.
