I live in Alberta, and own my own house. At the bottom of my staircase I have a small landing with a rail directly in front of you and 1 more step down off to the left. I would like to remove the rail and install a peninsula or 3 window gas fireplace at the bottom of a staircase. What I am wondering is if anyone knows if this would be against any building codes or safety regulations? The only reason I can think of why it would be a problem would be if someone ever fell down the stairs they could hit the fireplace.

I work in the USA so I am not an expert on Candaian codes but I'm sure your local building insoector is, call him. They do not charge to look at your plans and give opinions, you will likely need a permit anywhere. I had one similarly installed in a home when I bought it. The house pasted a building inspection with no comment about the fireplace's location.
