I have an 8yr. Old male. I have taken him to the vet several times concerning his weight with the only suggestion being changing his food and amount. He is on the Iams Weight Control with one cup per day regiment. He drinks about a gallon of water per day easy. The Vet does not believe that he is Diabetic, but if he were human, I would bet on it.

The vet can tell if your pet is diabetic with some simple tests, same as us. Daschunds have a propensity for overweight basically because of their size and low stature and because they are loved and carried around a lot ! But what you don't realize is that they were actually bred as a working dog. Their low stature enabled them to get in rodent holes. Your eight year old daschund can actually be a very active dog. Don't let the short legs fool you !
IAMS dog food is an excellent meal plan for weight control. My Walker Hound has been on it like forever and she is 80 lbs. Both her and I lead an active life style and walk a lot.
Your lovely pet should have regular excerise, lots of walking and play and I think you are feeding too much, so cut back a bit. Make sure he./she is eliminating properly, feces and urine. You will be fine, just more exercise.
