I have been dying my hair for 6 years now. I have been every color of the rainbow, bleached and dyed and chopped all the way off. My natural color is a dirty blonde and when I let that grow I ended up dying it again. The only color I never dyed my hair was black until January 1st 2006. Since then I have only re-dyed it once which was back in April. I absolutely hate having black hair. I have been letting it grow out because I don't want to bleach the color out. Now my roots are about 4 inches long and the black is "slowly" fading in certain spots looking brown. But it looks horrible. I refuse to cut my hair or bleach it. I want to dye it maybe a dirty blonde but how can I get the length of my hair to dye over the somewhat black. I am just tired of waiting for it to go away. I do not have the money to spend at a salon because the first time I dyed my hair it was a horrible disaster which when they tried to fix just got worse so I fixed it by cutting 15 inches of hair off leaving 2 inches all over my head. So therefore I have always done my own dye jobs, and never had any problems. I just want to get rid of the maybe 5 inches of black in my hair any suggestions?

In order to go from black to blonde you will need to strip the hair of its pigment and then add the new color of choice. Since you do not want to bleach your hair, there are hair color removal products available at the beauty supply store. You may have to use more than one application of the hair color remover to get the color out. When the color is removed, you can re-color your hair.

here's my black hair deal: always used semipermanents near natural light brown until I did all but the extremes-blonde and black... I did blonde and it was fine because I dyed over it and it fixed but then the black didn't come out... I died it about... january 2006 and its still in my hair... parts have faded to an orange or dark brown or sum natural color shines through... I tried color fix and used 2 boxes which didn't work on my near shoulder length hair... since I have gave up on it and used sun in which did absolutely nothing except make my brown roots blonde... so then I tried a permanent light/med brown which did NOTHING again... wut can I do since its been over 9 mnths besides see a stylist... I can't pay for and my parents won't... wut is there 2 do??

Okay so I went to Sallys and bought 3 boxes of that Color Fix stuff. I used 2 boxes. My whole head had a light brass tint to it which I believe was supposed to happen, anyway I picked a blonde that was a little lighter than I wanted to go because I heard it will be darker due to the brass color. I dyed my hair and dried it and everything. Only problem is there are spots in my length of hair that are a very dark brown. It does not look bad but it's not what I want. Should I just use the other box of color fix and maybe try over again?

I used the Color Fix and have spots on my hair... it didn't fix all the color for my hair either... you COULD use another box of color fix but personally I wouldn't bother because it damages your hair SOOOOO much and it didn't work on your hair the first time... I also used 2 boxes to find that it took my hair down to a dark/medium brown from black... I know that you keep hearing that you should go to a salon but really that's what I would do if I had the $ which I don't so I'm stuck doing @ home fixes... tell me how it all goes

When using hair color removers or bleach on the hair, it's important that the pigment/color is removed or bleach out evenly before using a toner. You can re-apply the hair color remover, but this time try to get all the color out and then add your desired color.

I've been dying my hair black for about a year now, but I'm bored of the color. I want to be a kind of dirty blonde color or my natural color, but nothing I do fades the dye. I've tried baking soda, dandruff shampoos, and detergents but the color only fades underneath at the base of my head. I have 1 inch roots, but they are reddish blonde, and it looks really bad, so I don't want to grow the black out. I don't want to bleach my hair either.

fionanex,

I didn't want 2 bleach my hair either but its really the only choice... I had my hair black for months and tried absolutely everything and the only thing that even made a difference was bleach... it didn't damage my hair as much as I thought it would if that's the reason for not wanting to bleach it...

I dyed my hair black in December and I'm becoming bored with it as well. I've decided to wait for it to grow out (it grows fast, almost half-way there now) if Color Fix doesn't work (going to the store right after this post). While I'm waiting, I don't want my nasty brown roots to clash with the black, so I've been dyeing the roots blonde and then dyeing them some flashy color like red or purple; it creates a really cool two-toned effect that I'm constantly getting compliments on. I really suggest it if you're looking for a quick root fix without dyeing them black again. Red, purple, orange, combinations with highlights; they all look good on top of black.

It's not a good idea to add onto a two-to-three year old thread.

In any case, there are instructions in this thread. The basic idea is to use color remover (ColorFix, Color Oops, Igora Phantom) to dissolve most or, hopefully, all of the black. The black pigment can then be washed out. You'll then probably have to bleach the hair to a lighter shade and finally re-dye the hair a pleasing color. It's not an easy process.

Here are some instructions for using ColorFix. Make sure you read it several times before trying to do it (whatever color remover you use).

Apparently washing your hair in fairy liquid and washing powder together works :) xx

... but not very well. It'll fade the black a little bit, but it won't get enough of it out to let you go lighter.

I want to dye my hair black but I'm scared I have dyed my hair too much. I am 12 and haven't seen my natural hair color since I was about 10 if not younger. My hair used to grow fast like 2 or 3 inches a month but now it's been 3 or 4 months and my hair has barely grown at all. I have kept the ends trimmed and evarything but it just won't grow. I want it to grow back out and fast because since I dyed it the dye is red but I am a natural brunette. I hate my roots. Does anyone want to give me any advice I would appreciate it.
Thanks! XD *Nekey*
