Changing a child's legal name is a legal process. Generally you would still need to get the permission of the father unless his rights have been terminated.

However, a person can use any name they want as long as there is no intent to defraud.

Some school districts require using the legal name, some don't, some require it only for some things. If you tell the school district that you want them to use a specific last name whenever possible, they should comply.

But to do it right you need to go through a legal process.

Using plain english usually garners a better response as its much easier to figure out what's going on. Save the texting for your phone please.
