I'm not a doctor! Just a 30 yr old woman... The discharge and the HPV are probably unrelated. The discharge you describe is more than likely part of your natural cycle. Pay attention to whether it comes at the same time during the month. I experience natural increase in discharge at various times of the month that range from clear to milky and "snot-like," and it's totally natural. It happens most often when I am ovulating, which may be why you experience a little pain with it. Many women experience some cramping during ovulation. As for discharge, some people just produce more fluid than others. You may be noticing it more if, for example, your hair is shorter, you are more sexually active, or simply because at 18 you are experiencing some changes in your cycle associated with getting older.

When the discharge smells bad, burns or is a strange color (A light red or brown is usually just a spot of old blood left over from your normal cycle and not cause for alarm even if it's not during your regular menstruation. What you want to look out for is green.).

Even though your discharge is probably nothing to worry about, just because it doesn't smell or itch doesn't mean it's not a mild yeast issue. A mild yeast imbalance is still nothing to be concerned about. When discharge gets chunky like snot, it can indicate there's not enough good bacteria in your vagina breaking down the things that are naturally up there. You can probably correct this with your diet. Just eat some more yogurt and you'll probably notice the discharge get thinner and less snotty. Excessive drinking or consumption of too much of any kind of sugar can also throw off your balance of yeast.

As for the HPV... HPV is a relatively new problem that women aren't taught about very well. There are many many strains of the virus and only a couple of them cause cancer. You must must must get your pap smear every year from now on, esp if you have pain periodically. The gentle scraping of the pap smear itself has been shown to reduce incidents of cancer dramatically. Always follow up with your doctor. If they want to remove cells after the initial pap smear, DO IT. Even if you skimp on all other medical care, don't skip out on your pap smears. It's not just your health, its your ability to have children in the future. The science behind this kind of girly-stuff is really advanced, and as long as you go for your routine annual screenings, you will never have to worry.

Again, I'm NOT a doctor. Only your doctor can tell you that there is nothing wrong with you, so check with a medical professional. Congrats on checking yourself out and asking questions!
