Are roofing shingles more expensive now than last year? I have been needing a roof and holding off, I would think now would be a good time to do this. Am I correct?

I don't know where you are, but I am in Ontaro and paid $5000 for a two bedroom bugalow to be shingled. A straight through job, only one roof.

$7500 for a 2400 s/f two story just last Novmeber. Shingles are not getting cheaper and they will not go down like the price of homes. If you need a roof get 3-4 estinates and go with the lowest reasonable bid. Be sure to specify the shingle you want, makes them compare apple to apple.

Shingle prices have risen about 25% in the past 5 months. Shingle companies had to buy material when oil was high. Takes many months for them to order raw materials, stock, make product and ship. With housing being low, the prices probably will not fall much or fast. I have worked at Lowe's for tha past 12+ years. Prices are now (Illinois) about $76 per square for dimensional and $64 for 3 tab (25 year). HD and Lowe's offer install packages. Might be good to include in the bid process. They might know who to call and who to avoid. Get a full materials list. Make sure the haul away is included. Are permits needed? You should know this and the cost before receiving estimates. The labor/ workmanship warranty is negotiable. Some offer 1 year. I got 5 years when mine was done in 2005. Good hunting!
